Hannah earned her Master's in International Relations from American University's School of International Service, and spent the years that followed living and working abroad — more than seven years total in Peru and El Salvador, where she became fluent in Spanish and learned to find connection and problem-solving across language and background. Early in her career, Hannah worked with collaborative problem solvers at Astra Nova School's online program, Synthesis, where she saw firsthand how kids, when given the right space and challenge, can out-think adults on problems that seem impossible to solve. That experience led her to international development work with President Carter's Carter Center, tackling real-world challenges alongside communities working to build better futures for themselves. In 2023, she moved to Atlanta, where she's continued to build on that work.
Hi, I'm Melissa! I spent 22 years teaching across almost every grade level — from 1st grade all the way through 8th — and that range has given me a deep understanding of how kids grow, learn, and change at every stage. I've worked with brand new readers just discovering the magic of books, and with middle schoolers navigating the complexity of who they're becoming. Across every grade and every student, I've noticed the same thing: kids rise to the level you believe they're capable of. I believe in holding a high bar AND building a genuine relationship, because you can't really have one without the other. At Alpha, I'm beyond excited to bring that same conviction — pushing every student further than they thought possible while making sure they know I am completely in their corner.
This is my 20th year in education and I am pumped to be at Alpha! I served for sixteen years as an elementary teacher, two years as an academic coach, and two years with KY’s Department of Education. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Ed., a Master's in Instructional Leadership, and a Rank I as a Nationally Board Certified Teacher. I am certified in Orton Gillingham and LETRS. I am passionate about literacy and ensuring students reach their full potential. I am grateful to be part of a school community that fosters an environment that meets students where they are and supports them to reach their limitless potential.
