If you’re familiar with Alpha School, you know that our students learn 2x as much as their peers in just 2 hours a day. And for years, we’ve called this system 2 Hour Learning.
But I have exciting news: 2 Hour Learning is getting a major upgrade.
We’re rebranding it into something smarter, faster, and more true to our mission. We’re calling it TimeBack.
This is a huge step toward our goal of making our education model accessible to more students.
And ultimately, there are two reasons we’re doing it.
Reason #1: Parents Deserve Clarity (and Less Confusion)
Ever since we launched 2 Hour Learning, I’ve received (and still receive) the same question from parents over and over again:
“So…does my kid just go to school for two hours?”
No way. I promise your child will not be coming home at 9:00 a.m with a backpack full of uneaten Clif bars and three hours-worth of pent-up energy.
2 Hour Learning simply refers to the 2 hours your kid will spend learning academics.
The rest of the school day is dedicated to learning life skills. Kids participate in team-based workshops where they build all the life skills you wish you did when you were a kid: financial literacy, grit, teamwork, public-speaking, entrepreneurship, and more.
But I get the confusion. 2 Hour Learning paints a sticky picture that is hard for many parents to get out of their head. And in the end, our goal was never “two hours.”
Our goal is to give kids their time back.
This is what I found myself telling parents over and over again. “We want to give your kid their time back.” Time to explore and build. Time to take big, ambitious, scary leaps. Time to grow into motivated, autonomous, capable young adults.
This is when things click for parents.
Immediately, they can see the vision and understand the model. I want to give all parents this level of instant clarity and buy-in. TimeBack reflects that truth.
Reason #2: We’re Scaling Software to 1 Billion Kids
A decade ago, Alpha started in a parent’s living room with only a handful of students. Fast forward to today, where we’re onboarding hundreds of new students into our schools, and therefore, onto our AI-powered platforms.
Which means, we need the horsepower to accommodate this growth.
TimeBack is a $100 million project to build an AI platform that helps students learn 10x faster than traditional classrooms. The TimeBack team is made up of the most world-class learning scientists, AI/LLM experts, and SaaS/Cloud app developers.
At Alpha, this is the first year we’ve fully transitioned over to TimeBack’s cutting-edge app stack. It’s technically still in beta, so of course there are bugs to fix and features to tweak. But I couldn’t be more excited about the direction we’re headed in.
Because TimeBack is going to transform literally everything we know about education.
It’s reinventing the idea of school, not on a city-by-city basis, but on a global scale. It’s what allows:
-
Personalized mastery learning at lightning speed
-
Real-time skill tracking
-
Motivation-driven XP systems
-
Adaptive tutoring built on cutting-edge AI
-
Entire academic years broken into visible, actionable goals
-
And the ability to do in two hours what takes traditional schools six.
Up until this point, our 2 Hour Learning platform has done the job well. But it’s time to upgrade. TimeBack will make these initiatives of personalized, mastery-based learning faster, smoother, smarter, and accessible to millions, even billions of kids.
TimeBack isn’t another educational “app.” It’s the tech operating system of the future of school.
Soon, I’ll do a deep dive into every piece of the TimeBack app stack: what our students use, how it works, and why it changes everything about learning.
You’ll see exactly how:
-
Students track their progress
-
XP and goals drive motivation
-
AI tutors personalize academics in real time
-
And how TimeBack frees up entire afternoons for life skill development
Welcome to the next chapter of Alpha and the future of school.
Welcome to TimeBack.
